Democracy is a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system. In the definition, we have two actors, the people and their elected agents otherwise known as the politicians.
So what happens to a society when a majority of both sides are bought and paid for by a small minority of our population through capitalism ?
The result is what we have today. The rich get richer, some middle class join the rich but the majority join the poor. This model is founded on the belief that everyone has an equal chance to become rich and if you attain this objective, it’s accomplished through hard work. Therefore any mechanism in place to redistribute that wealth, such as taxes, is a disincentive to hard work.
What the majority of The People seem to not realize is that there are no limits to the lengths corporations will go to fulfill their primary objective of maximizing profits. The current trends of our society, if extrapolated, would see a significant increase in the working poor resulting in a average quality of life that rival some of the poorest countries in the world. The People would believe, through Corporation propaganda that a democratic system controlled by Corporations is the best possible system for our society. This last statement is true depending on what is defined as best. In fact the aforementioned model resembles a survival of the fittest that can be found in any nature show on TV. The only problem is, as any parent will tell you, these programs are slightly disturbing in that the weak are exposed to pain, suffering and death. Unfortunately, this is not the outcome that is being promoted out there. I believe there is a minimum quality of life that all humans should enjoy regardless of how Darwinian challenged they are (lazy, stupid, irrational). I believe there is value in all of us and the perception of that value is depreciating at a rate that is inversely proportional to the profits and influence of corporations. Until The People decide to stand up for the poorest and weakest among us, the current trend will continue to its predictable end.

A storm is coming and if you’re smart, prepare yourself for its onslaught by accumulating wealth for you and you’re loved ones. Use the mechanisms available for passive resistance through voting and passionate discourse but avoid wasting your precious resources on trying to make change outside of the system in the form of charity or purchases of products that cost a premium due to their moral high ground (hybrid cars and fair trade foods) because when the storm hits nobody will care that you tried to do the right thing when you had money. All that will matter is whether or not you successfully positioned yourself as a have vs. a have-not.
